Where y'at dawlin?
Where y'at? New Orleans coffee shops...(to the same tune of "New Orleans Lady" by LeRoux...yep, one hit wonder.) I love coffee shops. It's no secret. But I especially love being in a New Orleans coffee shop. Today's choice: PJ's. There is one down the street from my house and without a car and not much to do at home, figured I might as well load up my bag with some student development theory and take a walk.
I have now been here about 2.5 hours and have enjoyed people watching. I have also begun to notice the New Orleans accent more than ever before. Matt and I talked about it the other night at the TEC function. I never quite noticed it before but New Orleanians definitely have their own accent. It's not a "yat" accent per se as I feel that description lowers the intellectual capacity of this community but it definitely is something else...I have often had people ask me why I don't have a southern accent and I always shrug my shoulders but no one has ever asked about my New Orleans accent or pointed one out. Maybe I have one, maybe I don't. But in any event, there is definitely one present in the community down here and it's thriving. You can hear it in PJ's today and you could definitely hear it last night at the Dome for the Saints game.
So in case I start dropping some "yat" language in the near future, be prepared. If I find myself texting you saying, "where y'at?" it means "Where are you?" or "How are you doing?" So now you know...
Cheers.
