Nicknames.
When I stop and reflect upon how many nicknames I have managed to adopt since undergrad, I am amazed at the number of things I have come to respond to and the number of people who have created a nickname for me.
In only two months here at UGA, I have picked up two new nicknames: Boo, and Ley Lee German. I'll give you a brief background to each...
Boo: After viewing To Kill A Mockingbird, as a class, Boo Radley somehow became someone my classmates identified me with (I guess it's the Bradley) and as a result, if I hear someone around campus yelling, "HEY BOO!" I'm likely to turn around. I have warned my guy friends though to be careful when using that nickname out at the bars or in other public settings. I don't want people to get the wrong ideas...
Ley Lee German: A much more interesting story. During a staff meeting one day, our colleagues picked partners to discuss the origin of our names. I told one of my colleagues that my last name was German and she said, "Brad German, nice name." No, I said...My last name is German but it's not literally German. "Oh." she said. Another colleague, Steve, asked me my middle name and I told him it was the same as his name. "Lee?" he said. Your name is Bradley Lee? No, Steve. My middle name is the same as your first name, not your own middle name. So as a result, I am known in the office as Bradley Lee German or Ley Lee German for short.
Does it really get any better than that? No. I think not.
Cheers.
