retarded. jewish. gay. How many times have we found ourselves in the middle of a group or a bystander listening to someone ignorantly say, "That's so gay!" or "That's so retarded." or even, "That's pretty jewish." Really? really? Is something really of a particular sexual identity, mental or physical handicap or a religion? I doubt it. So when did it become ok to use those words as synonymous for "stupid." Beats me.
In an effort to become better student affairs practitioners, we spend a great deal of time in class talking about inclusive language. No one wants to be seen as ignorant but we also don't wish to be seen as multiculturally incompetent or discriminatory.
One of my classmates, Will, sent us a link today to the site ThinkB4YouSpeak. I really liked two of the videos and I would recommend that you to check them out. Again, they are really short so I encourage you to watch them and think about your own language. How inclusive is it? I had hopes of adding them to the blog below but apparently, I'm not that tech savvy. So you'll have to go to the site (It's worth it...)
