Paddle Hard.
When I was younger, I loved going to water parks. I still do highly enjoy them but it's not quite the same thrill I had as a youngster. But I was never a huge fan of the lazy river. Seemed almost pointless to me. Who wanted to spend the day lounging in a raft floating around when you could be screaming at the top of your lungs as you navigated your way through a dark tunnel of water or shooting off a slide like a cannonball being shot from a cannon? Not me.
The older I've gotten, the more I've seen the benefits of a lazy river. The ability to just lie back, relax, and let someone else do all the work while you coast. Give me a daquiri and a lazy river any day of the week now and you'll find me a happy man.
Grad school, I've come to find out, is anything but a lazy river. More like a Class IV white water expedition. You spend all your time figuring out how to make it through the rapids that you don't have an opportunity to take advantage of the calmer waters. Such is the life. Our cohort spends so much time doing work that when we're not doing work, we're talking about how much work we have to do! It's an endless cycle. But like any white water rafting trip (and I've been on quite a few...) it's one hell of a ride.
I've been paddling hard so far and keeping a firm grasp on the T-grip. And I'm having a blast. But could you blame me for wanting a lazy river now and then? I'm hoping this weekend I can take some time to step back and just coast. A nap on the couch, a movie or two, and perhaps some good drinks. Looking forward to a good weekend.
Cheers.
