My grandfather is the type of man who, upon receiving a new gadget, will spend hours reading the manual cover to cover, word for word, before even attempting to set up or use the new gadget. I, on the other hand, will usually try to figure things out for myself and refer to the manual only when needed. Sometimes I am able to figure things out and sometimes not. In the case of setting up my printer, I failed. I thought I knew what I was doing but had to end up un-installing the software and starting over following the instructions step by step.

Our landlord, Howard, ascribes to the same mentality I have. After installing our washer/dryer on Tuesday, I put in a load of clothes, and then grabbed some earplugs and held tightly to Lucy to calm her. The washer took on a life of its own. It almost looked like it was possessed: shrieking, jumping around, vibrating, and turning. The entire washing machine turned almost 80 degrees before it stopped. Once the house settled back on its foundation, I thought to myself, "something doesn't appear to be quite right with this unit." After my roommate ran two loads and seemed just as baffled as I was, I called Howard to let him know we had a problem. He assumed the machine wasn't level, returned yesterday, decided it was level and that there was nothing else that could be done.

Then suddenly, the light bulb went off in his head and he decided maybe he should read the manual to confirm he installed in correctly. He didn't. There is a large metal rod that goes through the washing machine with a big WARNING label that clearly and boldly states: DANGER: FAILURE TO REMOVE PRIOR TO USE WILL RUIN EQUIPMENT. Oops. He pulled out the rod and our washing machine is fixed. It's amazing the little things in life that can take you places. He said he will just hope it didn't do any permanent damage to the machine. You and me both Howard.

I feel like I should give a quick shout out to my mom. It's her birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!

And also a mention that the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympic Games is tonight. Definitely pumped about that.

I'm headed to campus this morning for an interview and then spending the afternoon at the pool reading my summer required text: Chicken Soup for the Student Affairs Professional Soul. It's riveting. Almost like a Lifetime movie.

Be well. Cheers.
